Make your own Newspaper Headlines

Make your own newspaper headlines for the front window of a newspaper box on this downloadable template. Download a blank version of USA Today and/or the SF Chronicle – comes complete with banners and newspaper texture.
You will need ( tools or supplies ):
Printer (or access to a copy matt printer)
Scissors
Pens/color pencils (if you want to do your stories by hand)
Tape
Quarters
Step

Download a blank newspaper file. USA Today and SF Chronicle are available.

Step

If doing the paper by hand with pens, check out the tips in this step, then skip ahead to step #3.

Open the template image up in an image-editing program (I used Photoshop. You can try the Gimp for a free program – open source.) You can add stories that interest you by typing in text boxes and adding images you take or ones found on the web.

Tips:
Image: You may want to use a deep shade of gray for the text instead of black; you can try sampling colors from the rest of the paper.. You can "de saturate" the images and put some "grain" on them to make them read more like a real newspaper. Some "gaussian blur" on the text works well. You can also draw, or scan stories. You may want to do some color balance and brightness adjustments to make it look best for your printer.
Content: Think of under reported things, things from your community, personal stories. Check favorite blogs for content. Please avoid fear mongering or hate speech. Try to make people think, not panic or anguish.

Step

Print your paper.
Two suggested ways:
A) Send to a copy-mat and print on Tabloid sized paper using a color copy machine (this will do the print in one go and look great.
B) Cut your paper in half vertically and print one half at a time on 8.5x11 paper and print it at work or at home (color printer is best).

Step

Trim the white edges off of your paper.

Step

If you printed in two parts, tape the two halves back together on the back of the prints.

Step

Next, tape your "paper" to the front of a real newspaper. The top of the real paper will be visible. *Cover the bottom edge of the paper with the bottom of your print. Fold the paper if necessary.

Step

Put your paper in the window of the corresponding newspaper box. You may want to take a picture.
